3-Week Pre-Session Course/Program Description (Application Deadline February 15, 2014)

Study traditional stone lithography in the heart of Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico with Andrew and Kathryn Polk.

Lithography in Mexico is a three-week Summer Pre-Session course offered by the University of Arizona.  It is being offered for the first time, and it will take place primarily in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, where students will work in the lithography facilities at the Rufino Tamayo Workshop.

Students will spend two days in Mexico City where they will visit its museums and parks, including the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Studios. Oaxaca, located 287 miles south of Mexico City, is one of the world’s great meccas of art and printmaking. Students will learn first hand what it means to live and create art in one of world’s most unique regions - one renowned worldwide for its contemporary arts and crafts, its culinary triumphs, its indigenous cultural diversity, its ancient history, its year-round perfect weather, and its numerous glorious festivals.

The course fulfills School of Art BFA degree requirements and it provides transfer credit to non-UA students.  During this three week course, students will visit museums, archaeological sites, and ecological wonders, and they will also be hosted for visits to the studios of some of the region’s major contemporary artists. This short Pre-Session Program will give students a study abroad experience that will never be forgotten.

Student Housing in Oaxaca



During the 3 Week Pre-Session Course students will be accommodated, two to a room, in one or more of the city’s beautiful, centrally located, historic hotels.  Daily cleaning is provided. Wifi may or may not be available, depending upon the hotel, but it is widely available in numerous locations throughout Oaxaca.

June 5 th, we'll go to Museo Textil de Oaxaca, Museo de Arte Prehispánico Rufino Tamayo and other museums in Oaxaca

June 3, 2014-Scheduled Field Trip


June 3rd we are scheduled to visit Monte Alban http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/415 Monte Alban, located in the city of Oaxaca, is considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in Americas.  As a flourishing community for over 1500 years inhabited successively by the Olmecs, Zapotecs and Mixtecs, it is a site of pyramids, canals, terraces, dams, temple remains, and artificial mounds carved out of the mountain.

Marietta Bernstorff, Location Director, is a cultural promoter, visual artist and curator who has been actively promoting artistic and cultural exchanges between the Mexico and the United States for over 30 years.  In 2007, she founded the collective MAMAZ (Women artists and maíz), a non profit organization representing the women of Mexico, Cuba, the US, and Canada.  One of her recent MAMAZ projects, “Pieces of Fabric and Conversations Flying in the Air”, was selected in 2013 for the Festival of the World in London.  Others of her projects have been throughout Mexico; Havana, Cuba; and numerous cities in the United States. Ms Bernstorff resides in both Oaxaca and Texas.

Andrew Polk, Professor of Art, has taught lithography and other art courses at the University of Arizona School of Art since 1984.  His prints, paintings, drawings, and video works have been exhibited throughout the United States, and in such other countries as England, Wales, Ireland, India, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Australia, and China.

1. The Santo Domingo church is considered to be one of the most awe inspiring baroque churches in all of Mexico due to its size, lavish ornamentation, and beautiful architecture.






2. Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, a magnificent museum housed in what was previously the convent to the church, has beautiful galleries and corridors with art and artifacts from antiquity to the early 20th century.

3. The Ethonobotanical garden, located in what was previously the church’s orchards, has thousands of the exotic plants indigenous to the area.

Oaxaca, Famous for Textile Weaving


The Oaxacan craft markets are well known for their traditional hand-crafted textiles from embroidery to hand-loomed woven goods.  Brightly colored thread and hand-dyed yarn are used to create each unique piece of clothing and accessories. Oaxaca is home to many different indigenous groups, each of which has a distinctive textile style.

Kathryn Polk will be one of the teaching faculty for the UofArizona "Lithography in Mexico" 3-Week Pre-Session Course. She conducts lithography workshops around the US and periodically teaches art and design courses as an adjunct at the University of Arizona.  Her lithographs can be found in permanent print collections throughout the world in China, New Zealand, Korea, Wales, France and Argentina as well as in museums throughout the United States.

May 20, 2014 – Scheduled Field Trip



On our first day of field trips we are scheduled to visit three Mexico City sites and museums in the city’s historic center including:

1. The Bosque de Chapultepec, considered to be one of the world’s great urban parks along with New York City’s Central Park and Paris’ Bois de Boulogne.
